Back Pain Lower Back Pain- Are You Suffering From this?

Most people in their middle age experiencing body pain, especially Back Pain Lower Back Pain. A person experiencing this kind of discomfort can happen anywhere in their back, and the prominent area affected is the lower back. This is because your lower back supports most of your body’s weight.

If you are suffering from lower back pain, you are not the only one. I myself do suffer from back pain at one point in my life, especially during my last pregnancy with my youngest son. The study shows that almost 80 percent of adults are experiencing low back pain. This is mostly caused by the job-related complaint and the most common reason for many absences or resulted in missed work days.

Both men and women could suffer from low back pain, which can be distinguished in different intensity, from a dull, frequent ache to the unexpected sharp sensation that makes the person unable to perform well.

What Causes Lower Back Pain?

Pain could be suddenly felt as a result of an accident or may be due to lifting something heavy at work, or it may develop over time due to age-related concerns like changes of the spine.

Sedentary lifestyles could also be a factor for experiencing low back pain, due to the daily routine and not having enough workout to make the body more active.

The low back could be acute, or short term, and may last for a few days to a few weeks. It could be fixed on its own with proper care and be back again to function normally. Most acute back pain is mechanical in nature, which means that there is a disarrangement in the way the components of the back fit together as to the spine, muscle, intervertebral discs, and nerves are connected and move.

Risk Factors For Developing Low Back Pain

Certain risk factors may promote one’s risk for low back pain, this may include the following:

Fitness level: Being not physically fit could result to back pain. The weak back and abdominal muscles could not properly support the spine. It may also hard to determine the possible cause of pain even after a brief examination.

Use of imaging tests is not guaranteed in most cases. But, it may be ordered to rule out specific causes of pain, as to relate to tumors and spinal stenosis. Imaging and other types of tests include:

X-ray:  A technique used to look for broken bones or an injured vertebra. It also shows the bony structures and any vertebral misalignment or fractures.

Computerized tomography(CT) is used to see spinal structures that cannot be observed on conventional x-rays, such as disc rupture, spinal stenosis, or tumors.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic force instead of radiation to create a computerized- generated image. MRI scans also provide images of soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels. An MRI may be ordered if a problem is so severe such as infection, tumor, inflammation, disc herniation or rupture, or pressure on a nerve is suspected. But, it is not ordered during the early onset of low back pain.

Discography: May be used when other diagnostic procedures fail to identify the reason for pain. The procedure involves the injection of contrast dye into a spinal disc thought to be causing low back pain. The fluid’s pressure in the disc will reproduce the person’s symptoms if the disc is the cause. 

Is there a way back pain could be prevented?

Persistent back pain which resulted from poor posture or improper body mechanics is more likely avoidable. All we need is to avoid movements that will add tension or strain the back. It is important to maintain good posture and lifting objects properly.

Have a good regimen of low-impact exercises is highly recommended. Regular speed walking, swimming, or doing the stationary bike riding 30 minutes every day can also increase muscle strength and add more flexibility. Yoga could also a good option, it strengthens muscle tone and improves body posture. You may also consult a medical expert for some recommendations for a list of low-impact exercises that are more appropriate for a given age and health concern, that are focusing more to strengthen the lower back and abdominal muscles.

There are also some herbal supplements and herbal therapies that you could try to manage your pain. I believe this is another and safest way and will not cause any harm to someone suffering from lower back pain.

  2. Thank you for explaining that it’s important to lift objects properly and maintain good posture. I would think that sometimes, in the case of EMTs or firefighters you wouldn’t be able to maintain proper posture when lifting a person.
